Standard 1
Scientific and Theoretical Knowledge
Element 1.3: Describe and apply motor development theory and principles related to skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness.
Artifact: Motor Development Lab– Object Control Skills
Date: Fall 2011
Reflection:
Motor Development theory was assessed in PED 201 motor development lab object control skills assessing the children on their motor development skills. These skills included overhand throw and the catch of an object.
The results of my assessments showed that the children I observed had the basic elementary stage of the overhand throw and catch. Each student showed arm swung forward, high over shoulder, shoulder rotated towards throwing side, trunk flexed forward with forward motion of arm, a definite shift of weight and stepping forward with leg on same side as throwing arm.
Assessing and knowing the stages of throwing and catching are important for a physical educator because those are basic motor skills that are used many times in a physical education class and also have ben taught in class. In terms of motor development theory you can get a good idea of what stage each student is at in your class.
